STYLES OF OTS
Symbolic OTS
This type of OTS does not have a storyline in the original sense that it introduces the story to the audience. It usually consists of relevant actions, objects and sounds that link with the genre of the film, giving any clues that could indicate what is going to happen next in the film. The symbolism behind the scenes are open to interpretation but typically in horror it foreshadows a very grisly backstory or death.

A linear OTS follows a sequence in chronological order. It shows a series of events or a scene that leads on to the main story. Often symbolism can be shown by the props used by the actors or their costumes, for example the mask the killer wears in Scream, but it all revolves around a plot with a definite outcome- usually the death of the first victim.
