ANALYSIS OF TITLES WITHIN THE OTS
Opening credits for feature films often go in a traditional format, which follows a specific order. Most movies in the 1930s through 1950s listed lots of cast and crew in the opening credits, often in a sort of Playbill format as if the movie was a filmed stage play.
Nowadays, the order of credits is determined by guild rules - SAG, the DGA, WGA and other unions. They are ordered usually by their importance with the motion picture distribution and production company first, then the 'a film by' credit. After the title of the film, the lead cast is named separately and any minor characters may be placed together. From there the importance of roles is reversed and the credits work backwards to the writers and director. Once the director is named, the rest of the film follows.
Independent, non-union movies aren’t bound by union rules for opening credits. However, over the past two decades an order of listing cast and crew has become widely accepted by Hollywood studio and independent productions.
